HOUSING
Visiting scholars would be wise to look for housing before arrival. The Bay Area is a competitive, expensive, and difficult housing market, so make your arrangements well in advance of your arrival date. For assistance with housing in the local area, we recommend using the following:

Craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org
Cal Rentals Office: https://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu
International House:  http://ihouse.berkeley.edu

ARRIVAL

  1. As soon as possible after you arrive in Berkeley, visit the STSC Office at 543 Stephens Hall to get a full tour. We will give you a set of keys and a Patent Acknowledgement Form that you will need to sign in the presence of an STSC staff person. Email us in advance to make an appointment at stsc@berkeley.edu.
  2. Your next stop will be the VSPA office at 44 Barrows Hall between the hours of 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. You will take them your signed patent form. In addition, you will need to go on-line to pay the yearly $200 University fee for your visiting scholar appointment. Then you will need to go to Lower Sproul Plaza, where you will get your picture taken and then you will receive your Calnet ID card, which will entitle you to the use of UC facilities (e.g., libraries).
  3. International scholars must attend an orientation meeting at the Berkeley International Office (BIO). Information on immigration regulations and legal employment will be discussed. Attendance at this meeting is required to validate the stay of all international scholars. A list of upcoming meeting dates can be accessed at: http://internationaloffice.berkeley.edu.
  4. All STSC visiting scholars are required to present their work at an STSC event.  Details will be negotiated upon your arrival.
