Jerome Feldman has been working for some years on related problems in the STSC area. One applied project is the Berkeley Center for the Information Society (BCIS). The Berkeley Center for the Information Society is a research center focused on the social impact of the information technology revolution. BCIS has also started a supplementary grant to support UC Berkeley students researching topics in Technology and Society. A more general effort is the attempt to build a computational environment for Cooperative organization and activity. The Communities of Practice Environment (CoPE) is a novel software platform for supporting cooperative effort among formal and informal groups of people who may be separated in time, space, and language.
