STSC Summer Grants Program

Undergraduate Application Process

The Science, Technology, and Society Center (STSC) at the University of California Berkeley, announces the availability of grants of $500 to fund undergraduates for summer research projects that address issues of science, technology, and society.  These grants are designed to provide Berkeley undergraduates with an opportunity to explore interdisciplinary questions of interest to them via topics of their choosing.

TOPICS:
Topics should be consonant with STSC’s mission to advance understanding of scientific and technological practice and knowledge in their local, national and international settings, promoting scholarship regarding their deep intertwinings in society. 

ELIGIBILITY: Applications can be submitted by any Berkeley undergraduate not graduating at the end of the semester.

GRANT PERIOD AND USE OF FUNDS:  Grants must be spent between June 1st, 2008 and September 1st, 2008.  Funds may be used for direct costs related to the proposed project, such as travel to research sites; supplies and services, and equipment rental.  Funds may not be used for equipment purchase, stipend, living expenses, conference attendance, or educational travel.  Grant payments will be in the form of reimbursements for expenses.

GRANTEE REPORTING:  Grant recipients are required to submit a final report within two weeks of the end of the grant period containing an itemized expense report and a statement of what was accomplished.  Grant recipients may be asked to present their projects at a STSC Forum and their project description will appear in the Center's publicity materials.

• Faculty Mentor Information and Agreement Form
• 1-2 page project description
• Timeline for project completion
• Budget proposal

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications are due by March 14th, 2008. The successful candidate will be notified by April 15th, 2008. Grant funding will begin on June 1, 2008.
