Scholars working in STS take up a broad spectrum of questions. Topics currently pursued by Berkeley researchers include:

  • Legal: Regulatory regimes; intellectual property; patents and innovation; science and jurisprudence.
  • Political: Governance and accountability; R&D policy and funding; science and democracy; technology and the post-Cold-War international order; biological citizenship; gender, race, nation, and science; social justice; globalization.
  • Ethical: Distributive justice issues; deployment of new technologies; stem cell research; health care disparities; digital divides; technologies of racialization and racial profiling.
  • Humanistic: Conceptions of agency, value, and selfhood; the rhetoric and performativity of science; science and violence.
  • Societal: Expert-lay interactions; functioning of large technological systems; unintended consequences of technological change; sustainability; political economy of science; scientific dissent and science activism.
  • Philosophical and psychological: Meanings of modernity; the epistemic distinctness of scientific knowledge; the nature of creativity; perception and mind.
  • Local: regional roots of innovation; science and technology in California, and California in the world; stratification.
  • Global: New patterns of technology transfer and circulation of knowledge; North-South equity; post-colonial studies of science; transnational scientific-technical-medical traffic; division of scientific labor.
